An Afternoon With Young Writers

I had the privilege of doing a writing workshop with a group of homeschooled girls a few weeks ago. We met at a gorgeous park, had a picnic and had a blast talking writing.  I asked them to come with their writing notebooks so I could learn more about what they’d been up to. Talk about a group of talented young writers! It was so much fun to read their words. I was trying to think of a writing-related activity that would be fun for a group of kids so I put together a character worksheet with plenty of copies for taking home...

My New Writing Desk

I posted this picture on my Facebook Page a few weeks ago. If you were there, you might remember this sad little desk. It was neglected, misused and all those little cubbies were longing to live out their true purpose. One of my blogging compadres, Jamie, said that it was a totally appropriate desk for a historical writer. I couldn’t agree more. It’s been cleaned, spiffed, polished and filled with all my writing necessities. It is now the centerpiece of my brand new writing nook! So without delay (and as promised) here it is… Its 1...

I thought it would be fun to share some of the behind the scenes details of how I write a novel. So here it is! A new vlog with the making of Be Still My Soul. If you’re a writer, I’d love to hear some of your ideas for how you prepare and write. If you’re a reader, you’ll get a sneak peek into some of the process that goes into making a book. Thanks for...

Book Contract: How It All Happened

I write Appalachian romance. And if you read last weeks post, know that I recently signed a three book contract for the Cadence of Grace Series with WaterBrook/Multnomah. Yippee! The first book in the series, Be Still My Soul, drops readers in the midst of the Blue Ridge Mountains at the turn of the last century at a time when honor and duty walked the same path as hope and faith. It’s my prayer that this love story will touch hearts and encourage readers. When I originally sent out queries, I knew this series was going to be a tough sell to agents. If I managed...

What Songs Move You?

What Songs Move You?

I’m really curious. Because music is super important to what I do. I’m a writer. But I’m also a mom. A mom with three kids at home (all day long!) It’s not easy to balance homeschooling, a newborn, and writing. So when I sit down to write between the spelling lesson in the morning and the peanut butter catastrophe that’s sure to happen in the next hour, I need something to help transport me to the world my characters live in. I have dozens of play lists put together. Countless songs for particular emotions, experiences or settings. But I’ll name just a...

Bloopers and Blunders of a Wannabe Author

Posted on Jun 15, 2011 in For Writers, My Journal, Writing | 9 comments

“I’m just a cotton headed ninny muggins.” “You’re not a cotton headed ninny muggins…You’re just special.” Poor Buddy the elf. I know just how he feels. How so? Well, I’ve decided something–aspiring authors can sometimes be rather spastic people. Or for the sake of this blog post, “special.” I mean, we’ve got all this penned up energy, all these stories darting around in our brains while trying to squeeze through this funnel that leads to the world of publication. So at times (due...
